We know this is a challenging time for schools and colleges but it’s great to hear how you've been adapting to remote teaching and how your students are adapting to learning from home.

GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students at Kimbolton School, in Cambridgeshire, are continuing with their studies during lockdown by submitting photos of their dishes made at home, which would normally be created at school.

The emphasis on the work students submit is on developing high-level skills and focusing on food photography- unfortunately for their teachers, taste testing isn't an option

Student, Ollie (pictured right), is finding “cooking at home very different to cooking at school. It is different as it is just me cooking instead of a class of other people with me. Also the layout and storage of all the different ingredients and utensils is different as I am at home.” Other pupils have commented that cooking at school is more fun, but it’s easier at home using their own utensils.

Teacher Lucy King commented “normally at this time of year pupils would be preparing to carry out a mock non-examined assessment, making three dishes in three hours. We have been trying to continue our scheme of work where possible. We hope the families are enjoying the delicious creations.

We are teaching via iTunesU setting work with links to our own resources which we record with audio. We also use videos relating to the theory we are covering – last week was fish farming so we used Marine Conservation Society resources for students to find out about sustainable fishing.”

Thank you to Kimbolton for sharing their remote teaching and learning story with us. We love seeing how our students are getting on and how creative teachers are being.

If you have any stories from your school or college, we would love to share your news. To do this, please let us know by emailing ocrmarketing.campaigns@ocr.org.uk.
