Happy Halloween

Hi Colleague

Well done on getting to half term! We hope you're able to enjoy a well-deserved rest this half term, but if you're continuing to work on through, remember we're here to support you – please don't hesitate to get in touch.

We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has submitted their Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals unit level teacher assessed grades earlier this month. We've now emailed a selection of schools and colleges to request samples of work for the quality assurance process. If your school or college has been selected, please follow the instructions in the email to ensure everything is in place to submit your samples. If you need any support, please see our webpage.

In this week’s news:

  • spotlight on...our English team. Each week we'll be introducing different members of our Subject Advisor team and explaining how they can support you
  • a reminder of the summer 2022 arrangements for GCSE, AS and A Levels for each subject
  • maths teachers: we've got some useful information about formulae sheets we'll be providing students taking GCSE Maths exams in summer 2022 (and November 2022)
  • our proposal for a new GCSE in Natural History was discussed at Westminster Education Forum's 'Greening the Curriculum' conference this week
  • our spooky bakes and Halloween-themed quiz – scroll to the end if you're feeling brave enough!

Thanks to everybody who submitted a response to the joint Ofqual and DfE consultation on contingency arrangements for the summer 2022 exams. The consultation closed last week and we'll let you know the outcome as and when available.

Finally, just a reminder we won't be sending the usual weekly roundup on Friday 29 October due to half term.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and enjoy the half term break.

Spotlight on...our English Subject Advisor team
English

Each week, we'll be introducing you to members of our Subject Advisor team, who are there to help you deliver and assess our qualifications.

First up, meet Keeley Nolan and Isobel Woodger, our English Subject Advisors!

Keeley Nolan

Keeley: "I'm responsible for a portfolio of English qualifications including both GCSEs. I joined the English team in 2014, leading on the development of GCSE English Language and supporting first teaching of the new specification. Prior to joining OCR, I spent two years teaching abroad. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, reading and swimming."

Isobel Woodger

Isobel: "I have particular responsibility for the A Level English qualification suite. I previously worked as a classroom teacher in a co-educational state secondary school, with three years as second-in-charge in English with responsibility for Key Stage 5. In addition to teaching all age groups from Key Stage 3 to 5, I worked with the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education as a mentor to PGCE trainees. Before this, I studied for an MA in Film, Television and Screen Media with Birkbeck College, University of London while working as a learning support assistant at a large state comprehensive school."

Supporting our teachers

Our Subject Advisors offer a personal and specific point of contact for teachers to discuss qualification delivery and assessment queries or to speak about the support you'd like to receive in the future. We regularly share subject-specific blogs, newsletters, videos, guides and more. To find out how we're supporting you, visit our dedicated webpage. To get in touch with your subject-specific advisor, please contact us.

To support maths teachers, we’ve got some more information about the formulae sheets that we’ll be providing for students taking GCSE Maths exams in summer 2022 (and in November 2022). These are one of the measures announced by the DfE and Ofqual on 30 September.

We'll publish the formulae sheets for GCSE Maths (and our Free Standing Maths Qualification) as PDFs on the OCR website in the first half of November (timing subject to Ofqual confirmation). We’ll publish support materials in the form of equation sheets for GCSE Physics and GCSE Combined Science at the same time.
