Shuttleworth College have been donating PPE to their local NHS. Each donation is accompanied with a selection of cards and letters handmade by the children of keyworkers while at school.

English teacher Sasha Phillips came up with the idea to post cards and letters to vulnerable or lonely members of the local community and the idea has grown so much that over 600 cards, postcards and letters have been delivered to individuals and healthcare providers across the country.

To help fund the creation of the PPE needed to support their local NHS, Burnley General Hospital, staff have been donating the sums they would typically spend on fuel, coffee and other small luxuries. The wider community also have involved and the total now stands at over £4,500.

Along with giving the PPE from their Science and Technology department, the college is using the donations to create full-face visors and other PPE such as disposable aprons and gloves. They are also providing care packages for frontline staff..

The school’s production line is able to produce up to 350 visors each day. So far 1,600+ full-face visors have been created and delivered, 1,400+ disposable aprons have been purchased and donated (alongside hundreds of boxes of disposable gloves and paper towels) and 800 dissolvable wash-bags have been donated to Burnley General Hospital. Over 30 different healthcare providers have been supported, including 8 hospitals across the North West, 3 hospices, residential homes, nursing homes, district nurses, home-care providers and pharmacies and food bank volunteers. A trolley of provisions has also been donated to Burnley’s food bank.
