St Albans High School for Girls have run 100km to raise money for their local community.

Year 8 students, Emily and Isla, have raised over £2000 for The Luton Foodbank. They used their daily one hour of exercise permitted during lockdown, to run 100km over the course of several weeks.

“We came up with the idea because our school normally does a Year 8 charity challenge in the Easter holidays but it was cancelled due to coronavirus.”

St Albans"When everything got shut down, we couldn’t do our normal netball sessions but running was something we could do. We decided we wanted to help the food bank because we knew some people were finding it very difficult to buy anything to eat."

“It’s really important that everyone helps each other at this time and sticks together. To raise as much money as possible we had to have a difficult challenge and that’s when we came up with 100km! We are really pleased with the amount raised and hope it helps lots of families.”

Head, Amber Waite, was also keen to help and has been providing PPE for NHS trusts in the area.

The Design and Technology department have also been supporting. They have produced more than 1,000 multi-use sterilisable protective visors for medics treating coronavirus patients. These were formed with materials such as filament and acrylic and made on the school’s 3D printers and laser cutters. PPE has been provided to NHS Harrow, Lister Hospital in Stevenage, and Hemel hospital.

Aside from this, the school have also donated other vital PPE (in the form of protective goggles, plastic aprons, disposable coveralls and nitrile gloves) and over 100kg of food from their kitchens to local homeless charity, Open Door.

A huge thank you to St Albans High School for Girls for supporting the NHS with vital PPE. We also want to say a massive congratulations to Isla and Emily for their generous contribution to the Luton Foodbanks - running 100km is a great achievement, and a great way to keep fit for netball!
