Hello Colleague

We hope you’re having a great term so far and all is going well in your classroom. 😊

Ofqual has just opened a public consultation into providing formulae sheets in GCSE (9-1) Maths (and Physics & Combined Science) exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027. Please see the first article below for information.

So that we can support you, we’re really interested to learn more about how you use mark schemes and examiner reports. We’ve set up a short survey that takes just a few minutes to complete; we’d really appreciate your input.

Are you interested in marking with us? It’s a great opportunity to develop your understanding of a qualification and the assessment process. We’re currently recruiting examiners for GCSE (9-1) Maths, Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Maths, Core Maths, Further Maths A and Further Maths B (MEI). You can also browse other opportunities and sign up for job alerts on our Assessment Specialist webpage.

As ever, if you have any queries or need any further support, please get in touch with us. Our role is to support you as you deliver our qualifications.

Formulae sheets for GCSE (9-1) Maths and Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Maths
Student writing

If you have students entered into the November 2024 GCSE (9-1) Maths resit series, we can confirm that students will be given a formulae sheet in their exams.

For exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027, Ofqual has just launched a public consultation requesting your views on continuing to provide formulae sheets to students sitting GCSE (9-1) Maths (and Physics & Combined Science).

The consultation closes at 23:45 on 17 October 2024; please respond with your thoughts.

The outcome of this consultation will also determine whether we'll continue to provide students with the extra formulae sheet when sitting Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Maths in the years mentioned above.

Autumn term Teacher Networks

Throughout this term we’ll be running Teacher Networks on specific topics to support you.

Please see below for upcoming dates. Places for all are free and available to book now.

Teachers in a room
  • Tuesday 5 November - GCSE (9-1) Maths (face-to-face in Leeds) – We’ll be heading up to the offices of White Rose Education to deliver an afternoon teacher network. In the first hour we’ll cover the essentials of our GCSE (9-1) Maths for anyone considering teaching it, or just wanting to make sure they’re getting the most from the qualification and support. In the second hour we’ll review student performance in the summer 2024 exams and more. Feel free to attend for both hours or just one.
  • Wednesday 27 November - GCSE (9-1) Maths (online) – We’ll share student performance data and trends over time, up to and including reviewing summer 2024.
  • Thursday 28 November - A Level Maths (online) – We’ll focus on year 13 mocks, with a discussion on using mark schemes, examiners’ reports and candidate exemplars with students and an opportunity to share planning and assessment ideas.
  • Tuesday 3 December - GCSE (9-1) Maths (online) – We’ll discuss mocks at this network. We’ll share resources to support you and we look forward to hearing your ideas for best practice.

Whether you’re already teaching a qualification or just interested in learning more, you’re very welcome to attend.

New GCSE (9-1) Maths resources
Teacher and student working

We’ve published new GCSE (9-1) Maths resources in the last few weeks.

Firstly, we’ve published three new topic tests. You can create your own topic tests anytime from past exam questions using ExamBuilder, but to make sure you’ve got some ready to use, we’ve created a selection you can download right now.

The three just published are 'Approximation and estimation' (Higher tier) and 'Ratio, proportion and rates of change' (both Foundation and Higher tier versions).

Each of these are 50-mark student tests, ready for use in classrooms. These three new tests take us to a total of twenty-four topic tests covering the whole of our GCSE (9-1) Maths qualification content at both tiers. All of them are available to download now from Teach Cambridge (look in ‘Teaching’, then ‘Progress checking’).

Secondly, we’ve just published eighteen brand new topic worksheets and answers, on a range of Foundation tier GCSE (9-1) Maths topics. These were created in collaboration with Cambridge University Press and include questions, worked examples, tips and more. They’ve been designed for post-16 students revisiting topics, but would also be useful for any student revising for exams.

These eighteen new worksheets take us to a huge seventy-five worksheets now published in total, which you can download altogether in a single zip folder from Teach Cambridge (look in ‘Teaching’, then ‘Post-16 resources’).

New maths blogs
Person reading our blog on a tablet

We’ve published a couple of new guest blogs from MEI Curriculum Developer Keith Proffitt in the last few weeks. Firstly, in ‘Supporting your students’ start to A Level Maths’ Keith shares some great ideas for the first term of the year when delivering A Level Maths.

Secondly, we also published Keith’s ‘Getting started with large data sets’ blog, focussing on A Level Maths B (MEI), which includes some great ideas for incorporating the large data sets into the teaching of statistics.

If you didn’t see it last month, Keith’s also updated his ‘Why three large data sets for the MEI specification?’ blog to cover the new large data set 9.

Steven has also updated his AS, A Level Maths and Further Maths blog about calculators, with reference to the current guidelines and the latest support available. Finally, he’s also written about the range of resources available for studying Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Maths, including how to sign up for access to free material on MEI’s Integral site.

Upcoming conferences

We’ll very soon be at the La Salle #MathsConf36 in Sheffield, coming up on Saturday 12 October.

Later on in the term, we’ll also be heading down to London for the PiXL Maths conference on Tuesday 26 November.

If you’re going to either, we look forward to seeing you there and discussing our maths qualifications and support. You’ll probably be able to pick up a few free things from our stand too… 😊
